Tourism

Known as the gateway to the west, Winnipeg has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years and is now home to over 700,000 people. Although a part of the Prairie Provinces, water has played an essential role in the settlement of the province and of the lifestyle of its citizens. From enjoying cottage life at one of the over 100,000 lakes in the province; or living in a river city where you can cycle, walk or jog along one of the many kilometers of river walk; or sightseeing from a touring boat; or snowshoeing, curling and skating in the winter, Winnipeg's rivers play an essential part of daily life and are also the key reason for the settlement of the city at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.

Today, the junction of these two mighty rivers is called The Forks. This reclaimed section of the city is now home to markets, restaurants, unique shopping, attractions and a national park. A National Historic Site of Canada, The Forks is a year-round gathering place for entertainment including open-air concerts, the Manitoba Children's Museum, the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, summer buskers and winter fun.

Described as the "cultural cradle of the nation," Winnipeg has a long tradition of developing its arts community. Supporting countless art galleries, museums, theatres, dance companies and music organizations, Winnipeg is home to some of the oldest and most established theatre and dance companies in Canada, many of which call Winnipeg's historic Exchange District home.

The Exchange District is another National Historic Site and the jewel in Winnipeg's architectural crown. At the turn of the last century, Winnipeg was home to some of the most prominent architecture in Canada. Today, this district showcases the finest collection of pre-1913 architecture found anywhere in North America. But don't let the history fool you. The Exchange, as it's known, is a thriving neighbourhood filled with restaurants, clubs, funky independent stores, offices and lofts.
